The Mississippi Science Festival returns this week and is expected to attract scientists and artists from across the state.
Held from September 18-21 in the LeFleur Museum District, the nationally recognized festival brings the community together to celebrate science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) careers and introduces children of all ages to a variety of many different. thoughts related to industries located in Mississippi.
Entering its ninth year, the Mississippi Science Festival will include exhibits and activities at, but not limited to, the Mississippi Museum of Natural Sciences, the Mississippi Children’s Museum, the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum, and the Hall of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. . Corresponding Mississippi Science Festival events will take place in non-Jackson locations, as well, including the Children’s Museum of Mississippi – Meridian and the BB King Museum in Indianola.

Mississippi Science Fest Tech Summit (Wednesday, Sept. 18)
A panel of keynote speakers has been invited to the Jackson State University Student Center to discuss technology topics happening in the capital. The conference will have a press conference at 10 am, the keynote speech “Today’s Tinkerers are Tomorrow’s Innovators” by Dr. Calvin Mackie, founder and CEO of STEM NOLA, and key features including:
- Jackson Research Hub
- Technology’s Promise for the Current and Future Workforce
- Facilitating Legislative Involvement in Emerging Technologies
- Artificial Intelligence and the Private Sector
C Spire C3 Jr. Coding Challenge (Thursday, Sept. 19)
Organized by Mississippi-based C Spire – the largest wireless company in the United States – 24 schools from across the country were invited to Mississippi Children’s Centers in Jackson and Meridian to participate in the coding challenge designed for elementary school students. .
Teams of four fourth graders will be guided by a C Spire mentor to solve coding challenges, be served lunch, and participate in an awards ceremony following the challenge.
Field Trip Friday (Friday, Sept. 20)
Four museums within Jackson’s LeFleur Museum District invited students on a special STEM-themed field trip. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on experiments, interactive demonstrations, and see classroom science lessons come to life. Field trip opportunities are still available, and teachers are encouraged to contact any museums. This part of the day is designed to promote STEM subjects and increase literacy among students.
Pawns N’ Pajamas (Friday, Sept. 20)
Held at the Mississippi Children’s Museum in Jackson from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, children are invited to relax in their favorite pajamas and practice their chess skills against other players which have the same knowledge. Research shows playing chess improves problem solving and critical thinking skills, which can translate directly to math, science and reading scores. Advance registration is recommended for this event, but you are welcome.
C Spire Gaming Night (Friday, Sept. 20)
Also at the Mississippi Children’s Museum in Jackson from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, C Spire will offer video games for those who prefer a controller to a chess board. Kids can enjoy games like Mario Kart and Super Mario Brothers in a tournament-style environment.
Mississippi Science Fest (Saturday, Sept. 21)
The LeFleur Museum District’s four museums will offer children and families the opportunity to interact with nationally recognized STEM experts, create hands-on activities, and explore exciting experiments and exhibits. Visitors can purchase a $10 ticket that allows them to visit and participate in events at the four museums from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Museum, and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. Food vendors will also be on site.
Science Saturday at Meridian (Saturday, Sept. 21)
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Children’s Museum of Mississippi – Meridian will celebrate STEAM in conjunction with the Mississippi Science Festival in Jackson. This event aims to encourage children and families to explore STEAM concepts and discover related activities that children can pursue. Local STEAM leaders will be on hand to participate in educational, hands-on activities throughout the day.
Science Saturday in Indianola (Saturday, Sept. 21)
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the BB King Museum in Indianola will help children explore the world of bees, learn about the movement of water, and engage in the science of health and nutrition. as well as other activities and exhibitions. The museum will be open until 5 pm for those who want to continue exploring the history of music in Mississippi and one of its greatest artists, King himself.
